As a Lead Construction Superintendent for premier New York City builders, general contractors and developers, Five Sons Safety Managing Partner Bernard (Bernie) McCaffrey has dealt with and overcome the ever-changing landscape of law, regulations, and safety compliance associated with the New York City construction market for over 35 years.
Since the founding of Five Sons Safety Consultants in 2018, Bernie continues to be a respected source of knowledge owing to his wide breadth of experience and his keen ability to solve problems as they arise. This is the driving reason Five Sons Safety has been entrusted with providing safety protocols and plans for Turner Construction, Lend Lease, Aecom Tischman, Plaza Construction, and other top local, national, and international builders and developers.

June 2023 will mark the Fifth Anniversary of Five Sons Safety Consulting. When Five Sons was launched in 2018, it consisted of two individuals: Bernie and Denise McCaffrey. Bernie (Managing Partner) ran the field operations and Denise (President) handled all financial, marketing, legal, and insurance related matters. Over the past five years, Five Sons has grown its team of qualified Site, Fire, Concrete, and Construction Safety Managers. Additionally, Five Sons also utilizes a number of independent consultants who are Licensed Site Safety Managers for specific projects.
Many of Five Sons Safety Managers and Coordinators have honed their site, fire, and concrete safety skills for decades on construction sites as Foremen, Supers, and Project Managers. Our Safety Managers and Coordinators are currently monitoring and maintaining safety compliance on multiple sites for some of the largest construction firms and developers in New York City. Along with the growth in the number of employees, Five Sons clientele has grown exponentially.
In addition to providing reliable Site, Fire, Concrete Safety Management, Five Sons Safety Consulting, LLC now prepares Site Safety Plans, Facade Repair Safety Plans, and Site Safety Audits. Site Safety Plans cover all phases of construction from excavation to Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO). As per NYC Building Code Local Law 11, Facade Repair Plans can be prepared with or without PE/RA seal. Finally, Site Safety Audits can be performed on site, in an effort to assist the clients construction management team in identifying and addressing any safety deficiencies.
Finally, we are happy to announce that both our youngest son, Nolan, and our oldest son, Evan, have joined the ranks of Five Sons Safety Consulting. Nolan, a Local 40 Iron Worker, is a FDNY Certified Construction Fire Safety Manager and holds a FDNY Certificate of Fitness for Citywide Fire Guard (F-01). Evan is our new Field Operations Manager. Evan brings with him experience as a Local One Elevator Mechanic, followed by years as a Site Superintendent managing large projects such as the Woolworth Building Renovation and Tiffanys Flagship Expansion. In addition to coordinating all on site construction activities while a Super, Evan also ensured the safety of all workers, trades, and the public on and around his sites. There is no doubt that Evan will be an asset to Five Sons Safety. We look forward to the energy and insight they will both bring to the family business.

SITE SAFETY AUDITS & INSPECTIONS
Five Sons Safety Consulting, LLC provides Licensed Site Safety Managers that possess the knowledge and experience to pinpoint problem areas on the clients work sites during a daily safety audit inspection. After each inspection, the Site Safety Manager drafts a checklist that allows the safety team to quickly implement corrective actions to ensure the well-being of the site workers as well as the public.

Licensed Site Safety Manager
A Licensed Site Safety Manager is required on all new building, existing structures, or demolition sites. All Five Sons Site Safety Managers are accredited with the most current NYC Department of Buildings licenses and NYC FDNY certifications, along with all required classroom instruction mandated as Local Law 196. Prior to each shift, a Five Sons Safety Manager performs an extensive safety audit and reports back to the Site Construction Superintendent any non-compliant safety issues and concerns.
Licensed Site Safety Coordinator
A Licensed Site Safety Coordinator is required on all NYC construction or demolition sites of buildings up to 14 stories.
Citywide Fire Guard For Impairment
In any occupancy where a required fire protection system is out of service, a fire watch shall be maintained by one or more persons holding a FDNY Certificate of Fitness for Citywide Fire Guard for Impairment (F-01). For the final four hours of a planned or unplanned out of service condition when the affected area does not exceed 50,000 square feet, the impairment coordinator or a trained and knowledgeable person who is capable of performing fire watch duties and is designated by the building owner, may perform the fire watch duties. After four hours of an out of service condition, such patrols shall be conducted by Fire Guards holding a Certificate of Fitness for Citywide Fire Guard Impairment (F-01).
CONSTRUCTION FIRE SAFETY MANAGER
A FDNY Certified Fire Safety Manager is required where a Site Saftey Manager or a Site Safety Coordinator is required by the NYC Department of Buildings. Such person shall hold a Certificate of Fitness as a Construction Fire Safety Manager. The Construction Fire Safety Manager may be the Site Safety Manager or the Site Safety Coordinator required by the NYC Department of Buildings, except that a separate Construction Fire Safety Manager shall be designated for a building under construction when such building reaches a height of 20 stories or more than 250 feet, has a coverage of 200,000 square feet or greater, or is otherwise prescribed by rule.
Concrete Safety Manager
NYC construction projects which involve the placement of 2,000 cubic yards or more of concrete require a Concrete Safety Manager be present during the placement of any and all concrete on the site. The Concrete Safety Manager must monitor and keep a log of the methods, type, and amount of concrete being placed on the site on any given day.
